| Hayatabad, Charsadda 30 August 2010 This visit was to a small village called Hayatabad in tehsil Kalyaas in Charsadda. As before Nauman, Umair and Hassan spent a part of Friday and most of Saturday in purchasing the food stuff and packing it into bags of approximately 12 kg each. Nauman and Wasim Khan (Electrical department) proceeded along with a guide and left Islamabad at 0630. Traveling by the motorway M2, they exited at Shireen kot (rashakaee interchange) at 0810. Here the left side road leads to Risalpur and Nowshera while that on the right leads to Mardaan. The van crossed the railway tracks and proceeded on a small road parallel to the motorway. It took about 45 minutes to complete the first 7 km. At 0910 Buubak is reached. Here we got a new guide and proceed to the Hayatabad site. ![]() As we near Hayatabad it becomes plain that flood water had done its work of destruction to the mostly mud-built houses. Tasbeehullah and M Haroon, both teachers at a nearby school were the main help here. They have prepared lists and issued slips and after taking a tour of the village houses the group gets down to the task of distribution. Additionally a number of milk pack cartons are distributed amongst the children. Total amount spent on goods was 81,000 with 5,000 spent on transportation hence achieving a usefulness ratio of 94 %. | Madyan-Swat Dry rations were purchased form the local market and packed into bags weighing about 12 kg; a total of 100 bags were prepared. In addition there was a large number of quarter litre milk cartons, biscuits and dates. On Sunday, 05 Sept., the van rolled out at 0610 with Nauman, Umair and myself (Dr. Tahir Rasul) sharing the van with the 1.25 tons of food. We reached Mardan at 0805, Bat Khela at 0932 and Mingora at 1110. Faza Gat is passed at 1140. We pass Fateh Pur at 1335 and the road junction states; Madyan straight ahead and Miandam towards the right. A little short of Madyan, we found an army camp and a lot of locals gathered around it. Food bags were being distributed by the soldiers. We handed over the relief packages to the army personnel and asked them to use their own discretion. Meanwhile, Nauman and Umair, with the help of two soldiers got all the kids lined up and started distributing milk cartons, biscuits and dates. Some kids deposited their shares with the elders and got back to the line but Nauman considered it justified to let them have a second share. The soldiers were quite vigilant and continued to weed out such kids as and when they spot them. We started our return from Madyan at 1440. We broke our fast with some fruits that were purchased a short while ago and then stop at Takht Baee for food. The ratio of donation spent on actual food as compared to total amount spent was slightly lower due to the large disatnce traveled and was 93% Finally we reached home at 2200; tired but happy at our small efforts that were directed towards ensuring that the amount entrusted to us by donors was spent appropriately. |

| An initiative was taken by two recent AU graduates, Mr. Umair Aslam and Mr. Nauman Anjum of the Electrical Engineering (Electronics) department who thought of going out to the affected areas and distributing food items themselves, rather than donating the money that they had collected to an organization. Aided by three friends [Salman (biomedical technician); Munir (MBA and researcher at IIU); Hassan (computer science graduate)], they planned one evening and the next day spent 7 hours purchasing a number of different items from the market. These were then packed into bags of about 16 kg each. In addition they also collected used clothing, utensils and water bottles for donation. A van was hired and after acquiring information about an affected village near Nowshera, the company proceeded to Garhi Momin. This is a village near the Kabul river and is about an hour¿s drive form Taru jabba. Taru Jabba is located on the GT road and is a fifteen minutes drive from Nowshera. It took the volunteers 5 hours to reach the village. Garhi Momin is a village of about 400 families and almost 250 have been displaced as their residences have been completely gutted. The others are able to stay as their houses have suffered only partial damage. Through Munir the five volunteers were able to contact a local resident Mian Humayun (Asst. Prof.), who also acts as the local village head. He helped them identify 90 families to whom then the food was delivered. ![]() The volunteers were working with a total cash donation of 160,000 of which app 100,000 was distributed on Sunday (August 15). It speaks about the commitment of these boys and their good planning that out of this amount actual aid delivered was an incredible 95%. Apart from transportation to the site all expenses were borne by the volunteers. But what is more was their time spent in preparation, going out in the field and getting to know the misery of their affected brethren first hand. They are already planning their next outing to consume the remainder of their donations. Finally the day came the first thing to do was decorate the stalls and it was done in a fantastic manner using broad and chromatic ribbons and also using a bunches of distinctive balloons. At exactly 11.30 the party just started, the most popular stall was that of song dedication first to the teachers and than to the fellow students. There were some talented students who also sang live. Another stall which attracted students was that of flower dedication, there were stalls of eatables including Biryani, desserts and salads all home made.
